The F.P.Journe history

For over 45 years,

François-Paul Journe explored all the aspects of ancient horology. Through the restoration of one of a kind historical pieces, he revisits the intellectual and cultural path of clock and watchmakers who have imprinted the history of horological science. He is fascinated by the XVIII th century which remains the golden age of time measurement.

Each of the unique pieces François-Paul Journe was creating was the result of countless hours of research, that he saw disappearing when the commissioner took up his watch. He then began dreaming about a collection of high horology watches offering the same qualities - comfort, innovations and performances - but for a wider public!

In 1994

François-Paul Journe started designing his vision of contemporary watchmaking and presented in 1999, a collection of wristwatches signed F.P.Journe with the Latin wording – Invenit et Fecit – meaning “invented and made”. It thereby certifies that each of the watches carrying his name results from an entirely original conception with rigorous craftsmanship. He has to adapt his tailor-made know-how to the process of industrialisation et decorticate all the movements he invent so that each of his components can be manufactured under his specific requirements. His creative and intellectual invention process remains identical that when he was a craftsman, only the shaping changes considerably, with more contributors.

His integrity in the creation of innovative timepieces imposes him naturally as

the link between the golden age of
horological science and contemporary
watchmaking.

Starts his first tourbillon pocket-watch

François-Paul Journe conceives, at the age of 22, the mechanism of a planetarium for Asprey in London, commissioned by the ateliers P-G Brun in Paris.

Planetarium in yellow and white Gold, diamonds and rubies, with 12 panels in lapis lazuli, decorated with the zodiac signs representing the 12 months of the year. It features a synchronized pendulum with an arm supporting a wheel train animating the different planets turning around the sun: The Earth with its satellite, Venus and Mercury.

Complete his first tourbillon pocket watch

"Fascinated by the exceptional tourbillon watches that I had the opportunity to admire in my uncle’s workshop, but without the financial means to acquire any, I decided to build my own tourbillon chronometer. Working with the little experience I had behind me, I devoted all my free time to this project and it took me five years to complete it. I crafted every single component as well as the Gold and in Silver case. This watch is still part of my collection."

Sets up his first workshop on the rue de Verneuil in Paris

"I decided to set up my own workshop facing onto a courtyard, in order to enjoy a calm environment in which to continue creating tailor-made watches for collectors."

Creates an automatic chronometer pocket-watch

"My fifth creation with fusée and chain housing a five-second remontoire and a detent escapement. The rock crystal dial reveals the retrograde perpetual calendar mechanism with the equation of time. This creation is inspired by the famous watch ordered from Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747-1823) for Marie-Antoinette."

"I created my remontoire system in 1982 when making my second tourbillon pocket watch. World Premiere: Creates a mechanical mechanism with an automatic movement

"The creation of the Octa calibre was a real challenge for me, partly in terms of chronometry and timekeeping, but also in terms of respect of day-to-day comfort. I thus devised an automatic winding mechanical movement with a large power-reserve (120 hours) that could incorporate many future complications within the same volume. All models in the Octa collection are of identical in size and thickness."

"I agreed to the proposal to work with Harry Winston since there are many parallels between our work ethic and creativity. The jeweller works with natural materials (metals and precious stones), whereas a watchmaker uses man-made alloys (such as brass, bronze, steel, corundum) in crafting a movement. This proved an extremely beautiful encounter; an act accomplished by aesthetes at the service of the exclusive and the exceptional, culminating in the production of eighteen pieces signed Opus One."

Acquires the resonance regulator by Antide Janvier

"The acquisition of this regulator was an extremely emotional moment for me since it was made circa 1780 by one of the most brilliant French watchmakers in history: Antide Janvier. It symbolizes the link between the creation of my Chronomètre à Résonance and the most interesting 18th century research. It is one of the world's most beautiful regulators, which was the first known application of the phenomenon of resonance, along with two other such pieces currently on display in the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva and the Paul Dupuis Museum in Toulouse. It is now part of the Montres Journe SA collection."

"Only retailers with a truly horological approach can sell and promote our products. Only a few possess this competence worldwide and only can represent F.P.Journe properly. It is thus pointless for our company to take part in watch shows since our clients visit us throughout the year! Especially since the manufacture is located in the centre of Geneva and we can welcome clients in a more pleasant and friendly way. They also have the opportunity to visit the watchmaking workshops which are on the first floor. Moreover, our production is limited by nature, since all the movements are signed F.P.Journe -Invenit et Fecit- and this does not allow us to foresee opening other points of sale for the time being. There is thus no reason to be present at these "supermarkets" of the watchmaking industry."

The F.P.Journe - Invenit et Fecit - brand has opened a Boutique in Tokyo's equivalent of the Parisian St. Germain-des-Prés, a stone's throw away from the superb Nezu museum, in the Omotesando district. An elaborate place with lounge, bar and a watchmaking library where collectors and devotees of fine watchmaking will be able to get together and discuss their shared passion or acquire chronometers which are produced in limited numbers of a few hundreds a year. A location nestled within one of the most beautiful creations by the architect of spirituality: Mr. Tadao Ando. Already a reference for the initiated in the field of contemporary chronometry.

The charity gala for the ICM, Brain and Spinal Cord Institute, took place at the Conciergerie in Paris in the presence of many prestigious guests. F.P.Journe has created for the occasion, a unique timepiece of his model the Centigraphe Souverain in Platinum, producing a dial in blue mother of pearl featuring the ICM logo. It sold for 120’000 euros and the entire amount has been given to ICM.

"The new Chronomètre à Résonance has only one single barrel spring to provide power for the two movements. A differential placed on the first wheel, visible in the centre of the dial, transmits, independently, the energy of the barrel spring towards the two secondary gear trains. Each secondary gear train is equipped with a Remontoir d’Egalité of a frequency of 1 second. Working in such a way, the force received by the escapements remains linear and assures isochronism throughout 28 hours."

THE LARGE DATE

The F.P.Journe patented ultra-thin large date display consists of two concentric discs carrying the numerals encircled by a driving-wheel to ensure admirable readability.

The exclusive balance

All chronometers in the Souveraine and Octa collections house an exclusive large-size four-arm balance, providing enhanced precision rating stability.

THE STRAP

The straps are conceived with the same attention to detail as the watches themselves.
They are available in different colors in hand-stitched crocodile leather or in platinum, or upon request in 6N gold.

The platinum folding clasps or tang-type buckles are personalised with the brand logo.

THE CASE

The two-part case, in solid platinum or in 18K rose gold, ensures a comfortable fit.
It is secured to the wrist with a metal bracelet or a hand-stitched crocodile leather bracelet.

Each F.P.Journe chronometer is engraved with its individual number on the case-back.

THE CROWN

All crowns on watches by F.P.Journe -Invenit et Fecit- are stylised by means of an individually created knurling effect.

THE HANDS

The personalised blue steel hands indicate the hours, minutes and seconds as well as the power reserve of F.P.Journe chronometers.
